HSC School Ranking Results 2022
HSC or High School Certificate is achieved by students of Years 11 and 12 in New South Wales. The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) oversees the conduct of HSC exams and the preparation of its results. HSC is the official record of achievements in the academic career and ensures that students reach a minimum level of literacy and numeracy. It also helps in deciding the future career paths that students may pursue based on their learning abilities and performance in exams. This is why HSC school rankings become the best criteria for parents to decide which NSW higher secondary school will be the best for their child.
We, at Crunch Grade, provide you with all the information on HSC rankings and help you understand how NSW HSC school rankings can help and how you can use this information to your benefit.

The Calculation of HSC Schools Ranking
The HSC school rankings released by the NSW government are calculated in the following ways. To calculate the success rate, the NSW government uses High scores and the Total HSC exam sat. High scores refer to the total number of band 6 results achieved by the school, and the total HSC exam sat refers to the total HSC course sat from the school. Firstly, these two figures are calculated, and then High scores are divided by the HSC exam sat to obtain the success rate of the school.

The Difference between ATAR and HSC
ATAR – Australian tertiary admissions rank and HSC – Higher secondary school rank, both are ranking measures for years 11 and 12. ATAR ranks students based on state and age group for universities to provide admission while HSC ranks students based on average HSC examination and school performance. They both are different measures of academic performance, but ATAR rank can be calculated through HSC. NSW HSC school rankings are more for school’s performance, ATAR score is students’ performance across the state and with other students of the same grade.

HSC Courses
Every student has to complete 12 units of Preliminary courses and 10 units of HSC courses. The preliminary courses are to be completed in Year 11 while the corresponding HSC courses are to be completed in Year 12.
There are two kinds of HSC courses — Board Developed Courses and Board Endorsed Courses.
Board Developed courses, contribute towards ATAR and include subjects like
- English
- Maths
- Science
- Technology
- Creative Arts
- Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)
- Human Society and its Environment (HSIE)
- Languages
- Vocational Education and Training (VET) Curriculum Frameworks
Board Endorsed Courses are generally developed by schools, TAFEs or universities. They contribute to the HSC but don’t count towards your ATAR.
English is a compulsory course in HSC. There are four English courses in HSC English Advanced, English Standard, English Studies and English EAL/D.
English Studies: This course is for students who want to refine their skills and knowledge in English and consolidate their literacy skills. It is an alternative to the English Standard course.
English Standard: This course supports students to become effective, creative and confident communicators. This course prepares you to use English for a variety of purposes and situations.
English Advanced: This course helps you become a sophisticated user of the English language. This course is a pre or co-requisite for English Extension courses. English Extension 1 allows more specialised study, while English Extension 2 requires students to create a Major Work.
English EAL/D: This course is developed for students who have been educated in English for five years or less, either in Australia or overseas. If English is not your native language, you must take this course.
Mathematics is also one of the major subjects in HSC. There are three HSC Maths courses two of which can contribute to ATAR.
Mathematics Standard 1: It is a board-developed course that helps in refining skills and knowledge in Mathematics. If you intend to proceed from school with an appropriate mathematical background for entering the workforce and/or undertaking further community and workplace training, you must take this course.
Mathematics Standard 2: This course develops mathematical skills and knowledge in the field of statistics, finance, measurement and algebra to enhance their personal, social and job opportunities.
Mathematics Advanced: This is a pre-or co-requisite for the Mathematics Extension courses (Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2). Mathematics Extension 2 is the highest level mathematics course for students, as per the Australian curriculum. One must take this course if they have a special interest and ability in mathematics.
